Pigalle’s Mercury
French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Pigalle created this marble statue of Mercury, the messenger of the gods, tying the winged sandals that enable him to fly. Pigalle completed the piece in 1744 for admission to the French Academy. It is now in the Louvre in Paris.
